I have long been a fan of MAC's lipsticks (going on 20+ years now). The formulas make a big difference in the feel and look of the lipstick. Ones that can be on the matte/drier side (though I never feel them dry to to the point of being unpleasant and uncomfortable): Matte, Satin, Frost. Ones that can feel very creamy and appear glossy: Lustre, Glaze, Cremesheen, Amplified Cream.
All can have pretty good coverage except the Lustres and Glazes which are generally more on the sheer side.
Those are general rules of thumb. There are always exceptions. Especially with the limited edition colors that come out each month.
I agree, the shade swatches shown here are off in shade. They are the same swatches as the ones on MAC's website. As a rule, MAC's color swatches are generally a bit darker and cooler than the actual products themselves.
Standouts that I adore: Up the Amp, Russian Red, Snob, Creme d'Nude, Dubbonet, Ramblin' Rose and Girl About Town.
Lastly, they all smell divine, have great pigmentation, unique colors and are completely void of any unpleasant taste!
