OUR CURRENT STORIES ON SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITIES

NORDSTROM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Supporting Communities Through Scholarships

Since 1994, the Nordstrom Scholarship Program has been helping high school juniors achieve their dreams of going to college.

For Alexa Christensen, a junior at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Ariz., it was a typical Monday afternoon. She was settling in to one of her last classes of the day when her teacher announced they had some visitors. To Christensen's surprise, in walked her parents and a team of Nordstrom employees, who had exciting news to share—Christensen had been selected to receive a $10,000 Nordstrom Scholarship.

Investing in Education

Since 1994, the Nordstrom Scholarship Program has been helping hardworking students achieve their dreams of going to college. In 2013, we gave $10,000 scholarships to 80 outstanding students across the country, including Christensen.

"Giving back to the communities that support us is such an important part of our business and our culture," said Ellen Greene, Nordstrom Scholarship manager. "We know that paying for college can be a challenge for many students and families, which is why we started the Nordstrom Scholarship Program. Being able to help students get a college degree is just one of the ways we can make a difference in our communities."

Recognizing Outstanding Students

The scholarship is open to high school juniors who live and go to school in a state that has a Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack store. Students can apply online, where they answer some basic questions and write a personal statement and original essay—all great practice for those college applications. After reviewing each application, a panel of local community members and Nordstrom employees selects and interviews scholarship finalists.

Selecting the final scholarship recipients is no easy feat. In 2013, nearly 12,000 students applied—each with outstanding applications. So what exactly are we looking for in a Nordstrom Scholarship recipient? "We're looking for ambitious students that not only excel in the classroom, but also bring that same excitement, passion and determination into their communities through service and extracurricular activities," said Greene. "And that's exactly why the Nordstrom Scholarship selection committee was so impressed by Alexa," explained Greene.

Christensen was nominated for the scholarship by her chemistry teacher, Anne Baffert. "Alexa was one of the top students in my rigorous Honors Chemistry class. She is bright, well organized and highly motivated," said Baffert. "She grasps difficult concepts readily, and I could always count on her to help her peers who were struggling. Alexa is a shining example of a young leader who Salpointe and Tucson can be proud of."
