Cookie Johnson Offers the Right Fit

At Nordstrom, we work to serve the needs of diverse communities and customers across the country. Doing this well requires understanding the needs of each person we serve and providing the kinds of products they want. Enter CJ By Cookie Johnson.

Cookie Johnson, the wife of NBA great Magic Johnson, is a wife, mother and devoted philanthropist in and around her community. She is also a well-traveled woman with a deep knowledge of—and love for—fashion. Cookie was frustrated over the lack of stylish, fashion-forward jeans available for women like her—women who need jeans that accommodate a curvier fit. To change this, she teamed up with designer Michael Glasser of Rich & Skinny Denim to create a new line of jeans with a versatile fit for women with real bodies: CJ by Cookie Johnson.

A perfect fit
While it may seem a small thing, empowering people to feel good about themselves is a huge part of our work at Nordstrom. This is especially true when it comes to helping women feel good in the clothes they wear. CJ by Cookie Johnson offers a wide variety of styles in sizes that are hard to find in many denim lines.

"CJ by Cookie was something we were missing," said Laura Janney, national merchandise manager for Nordstrom's Savvy and Individualist departments. "It's a premium denim line that caters to our customers who aspire to wear premium denim but require a curvier fit." Nordstrom's partnership with Cookie is ideal, as it helps our customers find something they couldn't get before.

To promote her line, Cookie Johnson has made multiple public appearances in our stores. Those appearances have proved popular—in her first seven public appearances alone, we sold 1,021 pairs of Cookie's jeans, making it clear that we've found something our customers like.

Supporting diversity
Nordstrom's partnership with Cookie Johnson also reflects our ongoing commitment to diversity. We are proud to have the chance to partner with CJ by Cookie Johnson not only because it offers our customers a great product but also because it's a company that is minority and woman-owned.

Through our Supplier Diversity Program, which was launched in 1989, we actively promote ourselves to qualified businesses that might not otherwise have considered Nordstrom as a potential client—businesses like CJ by Cookie Johnson. The Nordstrom Supplier Diversity Program recruits vendors from a wide range of businesses including merchandise, supplies and services, and construction.

"We've found that our Supplier Diversity Program helps form community contacts with a wide range of business and civic leaders like Cookie Johnson," said Barb Valdez, director of Nordstrom's Supplier Diversity Program. "Our hope is that the resulting opportunities will not only benefit Nordstrom and its business partners, but ultimately help boost the economic vitality of the many communities we serve."
