Giving Back Before the Shopping Begins

Each time Nordstrom opens a full-line store, the company wants to give back to its local community before it opens its door for business. From the beginning, we want to demonstrate that we want to become the home town store and believe a key part of doing so is giving back.

When we announced plans for pre-opening galas in Nashville and St. Louis, the response was terrific. Our goal was to give customers a preview of the new stores while supporting nonprofit organizations that strive to make a difference in the areas of arts and culture, education, health, or community development in their communities. Nordstrom underwrites these events so that 100% of the sale of tickets can be donated to the selected non-profits.

"Just as important as selecting the right location, hiring great employees and getting inventory on the shelves, we seek to develop relationships with local nonprofit organizations that are making a difference in their community," said Claudia Gonzalez, contributions coordinator for Nordstrom. "It is great to connect in a meaningful way with the communities that give us so much, even before the shopping begins."

Galas for good
In Nashville, a crowd of nearly 2,000 guests was the first to preview the new store while enjoying cocktails, dinner and dessert buffets, vignette modeling and a special performance by country music artist Jake Owen. The gala raised more than $190,000 for the signature projects of The Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee, Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art, and The YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee.

"We are thrilled by the response to our arrival in Nashville," said Lori Stein, store manager for Nordstrom in Nashville. "It feels really good knowing that our pre-opening gala contributed to these outstanding organizations."

In St. Louis, guests enjoyed a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres reception, dinner and dessert buffets, live entertainment and fall fashion presentations. The celebration raised nearly $113,000 for four local nonprofit organizations including COCA, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Saint Louis Art Museum.

"These four groups have strong programs and are doing terrific things to make an impact in the St. Louis community," said Beth McAuley-Jepson, store manager of Nordstrom at Saint Louis Galleria. "We feel very fortunate to have partnered with them."

A tradition of giving back
The Nashville and Saint Louis Galleria grand openings continue the Nordstrom tradition of giving back. Every time we open a new store, we select a few nonprofit partners in the local community as beneficiaries. Nordstrom underwrites the cost of the events, ensuring that 100% of the money raised from ticket sales goes directly to the nonprofits to support their vital work in our communities.
