Heritage Months 2013: Be Inspired
Every day at Nordstrom we are inspired by the many unique and diverse people who make up the communities we serve. During our Heritage Months celebrations in 2013, we encourage our employees and customers to "Be Inspired" as we recognize some of the people who have influenced us.
Recognizing Extraordinary People

Each year we celebrate four Heritage Months—Black History Month in February, Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month in May, Pride Month in June and Hispanic Heritage Month in September—to honor the diversity we see every day, both in our stores and within our communities.

There are so many inspiring individuals in our world today, all hailing from different backgrounds, and we thought this was a great opportunity to hear from some of our employees about who has inspired them.
—James Thomas, Nordstrom Diversity Affairs Director

"Our customers and employees come from diverse backgrounds, and we've always worked to recognize and support that," said James Thomas, Diversity Affairs Director at Nordstrom.

We've celebrated Heritage Months in various ways over the years, but wanted to focus this year on remembering and recognizing some of the extraordinary people who've influenced us. We've asked our employees to share their own personal inspirations—real people who have inspired them in their everyday lives.

For example, Tracy Williams, Men's Clothing Manager at our Nordstrom San Francisco Centre store, shared during Black History Month in February that Maya Angelou is her inspiration. She said, "Maya Angelou is the unequivocal example of a graceful woman. She inspires through her words. She uplifts, values all people and guides from the heart. Every day, I strive to lead with grace and the same genuine influence."

When asked, other employees mentioned that Black History Month had made them think of inspirations Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey and President Barack Obama.

Everyday Inspirations

"As we looked at how we wanted to recognize Heritage Months this year, we agreed that these monthly celebrations are about remembering those figures in our lives, or even in history, who have guided us in learning more about those who may be different than we are," said Thomas. "There are so many inspiring individuals in our world today, all hailing from different backgrounds, and we thought this was a great opportunity to hear from some of our employees about who has inspired them."

As part of the monthly celebrations, customers will see signs in Nordstrom stores showcasing personal quotes from Nordstrom employees with inspirations related to the heritage being celebrated that month. Employees will also be featured on the Nordstrom blog, on Nordstrom's Facebook page and on Nordstrom store Facebook pages.

"It sounds so simple, but we truly want our customers and employees to be inspired by our approach to Heritage Months this year," continued Thomas. "We hope they will become a part of this concept and participate in sharing with us who inspires them, either on our blog or Facebook pages."
