Be Inspired

Each year, we celebrate Black History Month, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Pride Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.

For Nani Mahoe, Personal Stylist manager at Nordstrom Ala Moana in Honolulu, Black History Month is a time to reflect on the qualities and impact of Coretta Scott King. “She was a woman of intelligence, grace and strength,” said Mahoe. “She believed everyone had the power to bring about change and challenged her audience to bring positive change at home, at work and in the community.”

Mahoe shared her thoughts as part of our 2014 Heritage Month celebrations, in which we recognize some outstanding men and women in our communities.

Diversity is such an important part of who we are as a company.

A Time to Be Inspired

Each year, we celebrate four Heritage Months: Black History Month (February), Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (May), Pride Month (June) and Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), by honoring the contributions of people from each heritage. These months offer a great opportunity to take time to celebrate the people who are making a difference in our lives.

“Diversity is such an important part of who we are as a company,” said James Thomas, Corporate Diversity Affairs director at Nordstrom. “It makes our company better and our communities stronger. We’re excited to celebrate this diversity through the ‘Be Inspired’ campaign, and hope that our customers will join us in recognizing some exceptional people.”

This year, as part of our “Be Inspired” theme, we’ve asked employees from across the company, including our Nordstrom Rack and corporate divisions, to share who inspires them during each of the Heritage Months—and why. From actors and activists to athletes and artists, the people who inspire us are as diverse as the communities where we live and work.

Extraordinary People

Alan Hoang, salesperson at our Spokane store in Washington, finds inspiration from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, not only during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, but throughout the year. “He inspires me because he is so full of knowledge, but does not pass judgment towards anyone. If more people followed his teachings, the world would be a much better place,” Hoang said.

In addition to drawing inspiration from world leaders and notable historical figures, our employees are sharing inspirations that they find closer to home. Blanca Pereira, Accessories assistant manager at Nordstrom Rack Outlets at Orange, is particularly inspired by her parents during Hispanic Heritage Month. “They have both accomplished so much with so little,” said Pereira. “Their positive attitude, love and patience are qualities I strive to imitate.”

Be sure to keep an eye out during these Heritage Months for signs in our full-line stores that feature more employees and their sources of inspiration.
