Sadie Tapper of Nordstrom Product Group

Meet Sadie Tapper, Design Director for our supercool Savvy brands Leith and Tildon. We took a few moments to grill this style savant about work, play and her creative inspirations.

Tell us a little about your background. Did you always want to design clothing?
I've been in love with fashion since I learned how to dress myself, but I didn't decide to go into design until my freshman year of college. I chose design because it scared me the most and felt like the biggest challenge.

Hometown, please!
Plainfield, Illinois.

And how did you land in Seattle?
I moved here to be the Assistant Designer for BP.

Can you tell us a little about whom you're designing for? How are Tildon and Leith different, style-wise?
We are designing for a 20- to 30-year-old girl who wants "it" looks at an accessible price. The Leith girl is more of a risk taker. She mixes influences from the runway and the street to create her own unique look. The Tildon girl wants the must-have looks of the season from the runway, but always with a feminine spin. She'll wear a trend from head to toe in an exciting way without being too extreme.

What's your design process like?
Travel and tons of research; followed by a lot of collaboration about silhouettes, materials and artwork; followed by rapid sketching; then continued collaboration with product developers and technical designers to get samples made.

What's inspiring you right now?
The design team I work with; Paris, in general; menswear pieces reworked into women's wear; Russian "it" girls; the continued movement of creative communities.

Seattle can get a little grey. Do you have a sunny winter getaway?
Lately South or Central America. A quick getaway is usually LA or Hawaii.

How would you describe your personal style?
Great jeans, great tee, great shoe—plus one vintage piece.

Is there one designer whose work makes you swoon?
Right now it's Band of Outsiders.
