Saving Energy Reaps Rewards
Customers who visit the Nordstrom Tacoma Mall Store might notice a small cling on the door as they enter the store that says "This building is an Energy Star building." That small cling has big meaning.
In fall 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Nordstrom Tacoma Mall store the Energy Star designation for its energy conservation efforts that have resulted in the store using at least 35% less energy and generating at least 35% fewer greenhouse gas emissions per square foot than other similar buildings across the nation. Nordstrom Tacoma Mall is the first Nordstrom store to be recognized in this way.
"It's pretty neat that the hard work of all of our teams who have been a part of our efforts to reduce Nordstrom's carbon footprint has been recognized by the EPA in this way at our Tacoma store," said Linda Peffer, director of social responsibility at Nordstrom.
Over the years, Nordstrom's Store Planning team has explored new ways of improving the sustainability and efficiency of our stores. As part of the Tacoma store's recent remodel, the team focused on energy conservation initiatives such as installing more efficient heating and cooling systems and updating its lighting to add more energy-efficient LED and spotlight technology. With those initiatives in place, and after assessing other Nordstrom stores in our regions, Store Planning determined that the environmental performance at the Tacoma Mall store best matched the EPA's criteria for the Energy Star designation.
