One Big Idea Saves Tons of Paper

One Big Idea Saves Tons of Paper
A smart idea saves time, money and trees

For the past decade, our partnership with UGG® Australia has been a great benefit to customers who love the brand's popular, comfortable and stylish shoes and boots. And we love the opportunity to offer the products the UGG brand has become famous for in a joint effort that also keeps the environment in mind.

Historically, in footwear, the more shoes we would sell, the more waste paper and cardboard we would generate. While selling lots of shoes is good for business, it created clutter in our stores and piles of paper destined for the waste stream.

Creative thinking by a Nordstrom employee turned this problem into an opportunity to reduce our environmental impact while also saving time. When we asked team members throughout our business to submit ideas for improving sales or operations, Tacey Powers, then Divisional Merchandise Manager for Women's Shoes West and now National Merchandise Manager for Women's Shoes, proposed partnering with UGG Australia to reduce packaging for their shoes and boots.

"Our salespeople were as busy managing waste from shoe boxes as they were selling UGG shoes and boots," said Tacey. "I thought if we focused on reducing paper waste from this key vendor alone, it would really move the needle on the scale."

She presented it to UGG Australia and our Corporate Social Responsibility Advisory Panel. According to Tacey, "UGG really stepped up and took on the challenge from there."

The only two-time recipient of the "Nordstrom Partners in Excellence" Award, UGG Australia has a proven track record of joining with us to create benefits for our customers and also helping the environment. We first worked with the UGG brand to remove excess cardboard used to separate individual boots and shoes. UGG Australia then eliminated the tissue paper stuffed into boots to hold their shape, replacing it with inserts made from recyclable, post-consumer-waste paper.

These changes are helping us reduce the waste paper we generate. In fact, 76,000 pounds (or 38 tons) of waste will be avoided in 2010 as a result of the program. "We love having less clutter," said David Rauch, a top seller in Women's Shoes at our Bellevue Square store in Bellevue, Washington. "And the recyclable shoe bag means less time spent removing and disposing of tissue and more time selling UGG."

"We at UGG Australia are very proud of the progress we've made toward more sustainable business practices," says Constance Rishwain, president, UGG Australia. "We have a long way to go, but having an enthusiastic partner like Nordstrom makes it possible to continue moving toward a greener business."
