Product Innovations

Where do our products and packaging come from? Where do they go after they leave our stores? These are not always easy questions to answer—our stores are just one link in a complex supply chain that connects communities across the globe. While we don't always have direct control over how goods are made or what happens after the sale, we do have influence to make positive change happen. Our goal is to make a difference up and down the supply chain by reducing waste, using recycled materials, supporting eco-friendly products, and offering our customers responsible choices.

Eco-Conscious Style

Organic Cotton

Organic farming methods replenish soil and reduce the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers. We offer a wide selection of popular brands that use organic cotton.

Clothing Fabrics

Trees from forests around the world—from the Pacific Northwest of North America to Indonesia to the Amazon—are being processed for the clothing industry. Fabrics like rayon, viscose, modal and lyocell are most commonly made from regenerated cellulose, which is a direct product of trees cut down exclusively to feed dissolving-pulp mills.

As demand for dissolving pulp increases, developing more sustainable fabric solutions is even more important. Because Nordstrom works primarily with cut-and-sew manufacturers through our relatively small private-label business, we aren't always able to specifically influence fabric production. However, we are committed to finding opportunities to prioritize and increase the use of fabrics that do not rely on the use of forest fiber in our private-label brands where we can. At the same time, we are working to educate our private-label brands and other brands we sell in our stores—a majority of our product offering—about understanding the sources of the raw materials used and their impacts on our planet. Specifically, we encourage brands to ensure they are not sourcing from ancient and endangered forests, endangered species habitat and/or illegally logged forests.

We applaud efforts already under way, including those that have been undertaken by some of our vendors—Eileen Fisher, Patagonia, prAna and Quiksilver—with guidance from the nonprofit organization Canopy.

Packaging, bags, and boxes

The three Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle

Recycling is just one part of the sustainable packaging cycle. Reducing and reusing are just as critical. All bags and boxes at Nordstrom are now recyclable, and we're also using less packaging and choosing products made of recycled content.

  • 100%-recyclable bags and boxes. If it came from us, you can put it in the recycle bin.
  • Reduced packaging at More box sizes means a better fit for merchandise and less waste all around.
  • Nordstrom Rack shopping bags. Contain up to 25% recycled content.
  • Reusing shipping boxes. Our Distribution and Fulfillment Centers also reuse corrugated shipping boxes when possible to help cut down the amount of packaging we use.
Supplier Scorecard Initiative

Through our Supplier Scorecard Initiative, we're working with some of our vendor partners to help them track and measure their product packaging. The ultimate goal is to help them identify opportunities to reduce the amount of packaging they use and find ways to incorporate more environmentally friendly packaging into their supply chain.

Industry standards

Some challenges call for a team effort

When issues fall outside our direct control, action is needed from every part of the global supply chain. Nordstrom works with other industry leaders in Voluntary Inter-industry Commerce Solutions (VICS), an industry nonprofit dedicated to improving the supply chain. As a member of the packaging subcommittee, we review current practices and look for new and better ways to make the entire supply chain more sustainable.

Sustainable Apparel Coalition

Nordstrom has joined apparel and footwear retailers and environmental and social organizations as a Founding Circle member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition. The Coalition is working to reduce the environmental and social impacts of apparel and footwear products by building an industry-wide index - the Apparel Index - that will measure and evaluate products' sustainability performance throughout the life of the product - from design concept through production and finally purchase. The index will help to identify opportunities for innovation in products and processes and provide customers with more information about the impacts of the products they're considering purchasing. Environmental factors such as water, energy, waste, and materials (including packaging) and chemicals used through out production are among the areas that will be measured and reported.
