Pay Your Fashion Forward

After raising more than $100,000 for nearly 1,500 charities (and counting!), Fashion Project’s limited-time Nordstrom Gift Card promotion ended on November 30, 2014. The good news is that you can still donate and raise money for your favorite charity—simply log in to FashionProject.com and pledge a donation. Special thanks to all of the Nordstrom customers who made this promotion such a great success!

When she heard about the new partnership between Nordstrom and FashionProject.com, Nordstrom Personal Stylist Ryane Michaels knew it was the perfect opportunity to do a little spring-cleaning. "I looked through my closet and tried to be realistic about what I haven't worn recently and what doesn't fit, either because of size or my evolving style," said Michaels. "Not only did this motivate me to update my closet, I was able to give back to a community organization I love and I get a Nordstrom Gift Card. It's a win-win!"

—Ryane Michaels, Personal Stylist, Nordstrom Michigan Avenue, Chicago

Founded in 2012 by recent Harvard graduates Christine Rizk and Anna Palmer, FashionProject.com sells high-quality men's and women's clothing, shoes and accessories that are donated by style-savvy shoppers. The majority of net proceeds from the sale of these items are then donated to a charity of the donor's choice. Hundreds of charities have registered to benefit from the site, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Dress for Success, National Down Syndrome Society and Women's Global Empowerment Fund, among others.

Now FashionProject.com has teamed up with Nordstrom to offer an added bonus for qualifying donors. For every five qualifying items donated to FashionProject.com, you'll receive a $40 Nordstrom Gift Card. So you can update your closet and give back, all at the same time.

Supporting Local Communities

With so many charities to choose from on the FashionProject.com website, it's easy to find an organization that's working on the issues that matter most to you. Michaels, who serves customers at our Michigan Avenue store in Chicago, chose to donate her clothes to benefit BUILD, a Chicago-based organization that focuses on reducing violence in some of the city's toughest neighborhoods.

"I really wanted to be able to support an organization that's local and focused on the unique needs of Chicago," explained Michaels. "There's so much need in our community, and sometimes it's easy to lose sight of that," she went on. "I love that this new partnership makes it so easy to support community organizations, particularly for people who aren't sure how to get involved or don't have a lot of spare time."

Not sure which organization to choose? Check out the list of charities that Nordstrom has supported this past year to get you started. And if your favorite charity isn't listed, e-mail FashionProject.com at charities@fashionproject.com to get them set up on the site.

Get Started

Ready for a closet refresh? To start, head over to www.fashionproject.com/nordstrom, enter your information, select which charity you'd like to support (or submit a new one) and request a pre-paid donation envelope. Once the envelope arrives, fill it with the items you'd like to donate and drop it in the mail. FashionProject.com will process every item and determine which items will be photographed and listed for sale on their website. Once you've donated five qualifying items, FashionProject.com will mail you a $40 Nordstrom Gift Card. A qualifying item:

  • Meets or exceeds $50 in original retail price.
  • Is nearly new or in great condition (gently worn, no fading, stains or tears).
  • Is one of FashionProject.com's qualifying brands.

It's really after the Gift Card arrives that the hard part begins: deciding how to spend it! "With spring around the corner, I'm ready for lighter fabrics and brighter colors," Michaels told us. "I'm also interested in investing in some comfortable heels. I've had my eye on some Pedro Garcia booties, and this just may be my excuse to splurge!"
