Together We Work Better
At Nordstrom, we find value in partnering with a diverse supplier base and are committed to providing opportunities for diverse-owned businesses to work with us. For us, it is vital to have partnerships with viable suppliers that provide us with a competitive advantage and provide our customers with the products, services and experiences they want.
With that goal in mind, we established our Supplier Diversity Program in 1989. Since then, we have purchased $12 billion in products and services from diverse-owned businesses. In 2012, we spent more than $1 billion with these businesses.
The Supplier Diversity Program at Nordstrom has always been about bringing in compelling merchandise and seeking out the best in services.
Room to Grow
In 2012, we expanded the program to enable potential opportunities with businesses owned by minority, female, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, veteran and disabled individuals.
"The Supplier Diversity Program at Nordstrom has always been about bringing in compelling merchandise and seeking out the best in services from vendors who might not have had the opportunity to partner with us," said Sandra Loza, the program's director. "Expanding our diversity classifications just broadens our ability to potentially partner with a greater pool of fantastic vendors and continue to strengthen economies of the communities we serve."
When working to identify ways to expand the program, we worked closely with the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), U.S. Department of Verification Assistance Program (VAP) and the U.S. Business Leadership Network (USBLN). All three organizations can provide businesses with the certification they need to be considered for the program.
Quality Merchandise and Services
We recognize that there is a substantial opportunity for Nordstrom to do business with diverse-owned businesses. Our business decisions are based on the founding philosophy of John W. Nordstrom: Offer the customer the best possible service, selection, quality and value. Through our Supplier Diversity Program, we hope to offer our customers compelling merchandise that represents the latest fashions.
However, the Supplier Diversity Program is also focused on promoting Nordstrom to qualified businesses that might not otherwise think of us as a potential client. We aim to recruit vendors from a wide range of business areas, including construction, supplies and services. Each of these offerings is an important part of creating a positive experience for our customers.
As we expand our presence into new communities, the opportunity to partner with diverse-owned businesses multiplies. We are currently seeking diverse-owned subcontractors for several new store projects, including Chinook Centre in Calgary, Alberta; St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville, Florida; and The Woodlands Mall in The Woodlands, Texas.
"We see the opportunity for success in the relationships we have with each of our business partners," said Loza. "We're excited for the potential partnerships that can develop as we enter these new markets."
