A Tradition of Giving Back

Nordstrom at the Americana at Brand opening gala in Glendale, Calif., honors local nonprofit organizations.

One of the most special and favorite traditions we have at Nordstrom happens even before our full-line stores open their doors to customers. To celebrate a new full-line store's opening and the community in which we'll be doing business, we host an opening gala that honors local nonprofit organizations that are making a difference.

Shopping & Worthwhile Causes in Glendale

In keeping with that tradition, more than 1,000 guests joined actress, designer and honorary gala chair Nicole Richie at the new Nordstrom at the Americana at Brand store in Glendale, Calif., in September 2013.

Attendees got a sneak preview of the new store while enjoying delicious savories, sweets, cocktails and live entertainment. The evening also included modeling vignettes that featured some of the season's hottest looks from brands like Topshop, Burberry, MISS WU, rag & bone and Alexander Wang.

But the event was about much more than shopping. Nordstrom underwrites the cost of these events, so 100 percent of the money raised from ticket sales goes directly to the beneficiary nonprofit organizations. In Glendale, Hillsides and Ascencia were selected.

Making a Positive Impact

Focused on improving the overall well-being of vulnerable children and their families, Hillsides provides high-quality care, advocacy and innovative services that promote safe, permanent environments where young people can thrive. With proceeds from the gala, Hillsides will fund programs for the expressive arts, including therapeutic programs that incorporate art, music, creative writing and photography.

"We are excited to be selected as a beneficiary for Nordstrom during our centennial celebration," said Joe Costa, Hillsides chief executive officer. "We are committed to providing our clients with the best possible service and using the funds from this gala to augment it with a therapeutic music and arts program that heals, encourages self-expression, and restores hope."

Ascencia meets a critical need in the greater Glendale area, serving more than 1,200 homeless men, women and children each year. Gala proceeds will support the organization's 40-bed shelter for families and single adults.

"We are honored to be selected by Nordstrom as a beneficiary of their grand opening gala," said Natalie Profant Komuro, Ascencia's executive director. "As Nordstrom celebrates its move to a new home, we appreciate their support of Ascencia's work to house our community's homeless neighbors."

By the end of the night, the event had raised more than $107,000 for the two important community organizations.
