To Boot New York 'Felix' Oxford
Great work shoe
I am currently selling shoes and I figured it would be appropriate to have a nice pair myself so I picked these up on the Anniversary sale. I have had dress shoes in the past and didn't quite understand what would make the difference between a $100 pair and a $300 pair like these. After wearing them for just a day I could tell, besides the amazing comfort, the looks alone are worth the price!
I have had these shoes now for five or so months, and the leather footbed is perfectly broken in for my foot. I can not go a day at work without people commenting on how nice they look, I have even had customers come off the aisle to ask me about them!
I have seen a few negative reviews on these shoes, yes the toes areas wrinkles.. put a shoe tree in it and condition the leather, quick fix. I actually like the lines, give the shoe some extra character! But with a regular shine these shoes will be turning heads for years to come!
I agree with the anonymous review above. I had the black and I had to get the brown too. Not sure what these one-star reviews are complaining about. Yes there's a break, but it is not pronounced and at worst it looks like a toe-capped shoe. The square toe is modern, euro look, but I for one like it. If you want a rounded toe, check out the Clark or the Caine.
I was disappointed at how quickly the leather on these shoes wrinkled. I wore the shoes for about an hour and they looked worse than shoes that I've had for 5 years. I returned them to Nordstrom shortly thereafter. The salesperson told me that he had three customers return the shoes for the same reason. I would avoid these.
Excellent everyday shoe
Having tried on TBNY shoes at the local Nordstrom plenty of times, I was a bit apprehensive about the fit of these oxfords. My feet are 12.5-13.0 E, a tough fit in size & width. I'd say this shoe is a generous 13-D, so if you're used to a standard D fit, you'd find this shoe a tad roomy.
These oxfords are really very comfortable from day one, albeit with a stiff last that will take a few days wear to feel like the everyday shoes they will become.
The color is awesome, to put it plainly - the dark brown nose that fades slightly to a deep caramel gives the shoe an expensive appearance, without looking tacky (as some other brands' attempts at this appearance do).
The shape is contemporary with a long toe box and slightly squared front end yet traditional enough that you could wear with a suit or with khakhis.
The footbed feels soft but firm - no air beds or gels here, but remarkably comfortable. No pronounced arch support, but I have a high arch, and this felt supportive enough.
The only beef I have, and the reason for the 1-star deduction is that the toebox is quite rigid, and the break falls mid-toe rather than at the base of my toe, which is painful when I wear the shoe every morning for several minutes. The rigidity of the toebox is important to give the shoe its appearance and to keep that look long, but it is probably the one feature that creates discomfort.
But it may work differently for others, so I'd recommend it heartily (especially if it's on sale!)
