Interview with Marianna Hewitt
When the opportunity arose for Los Angeles-based blogger Marianna Hewitt to team up with DL1961 on a line of jeans, she knew exactly what she wanted it to look like. "I basically got to create my dream denim capsule collection," Hewitt says. "If I could only have these jeans in my closet, I would have a perfect style for every occasion."
One occasion will be New York Fashion Week. With the collaboration under wraps for so long, her excitement to finally be seen in it was palpable when we spoke on the phone. "There's an amazing set—it's a jean and jacket combo—and I think it's going to be such a great street-style look," she said of what she's looking forward to wearing on the NYFW scene.
Here's Hewitt on all things Fashion Week and links to shop the collection below.
How did the collaboration come about?
I was first introduced to DL1961 a few years ago when Jessica Alba did a collection with the brand. I got gifted some of the jeans and fell in love with them—the fits, the fabrics, the styles. Day to night, whether I'm in meetings or going out with friends, denim is always my go-to look, so this was the perfect collaboration for me.
What style elements did you add to make this collection your own?
I wear rose-gold jewelry every day, so all the little accent buttons are rose gold. It was a little feminine touch that's different from what you might see on other jeans.
What about fit considerations?
I'm 5'1" and whenever I post [in jeans] on Instagram, girls want to know where they can buy petite denim. So, when we were looking at styles, we thought, "OK, why don't we do a raw hem for some of these so she can just cut the bottom off and they'll fit perfectly for her?" We did a lot of cropped and high-waisted styles so they could accentuate many different body types.
What is your favorite style of jeans?
I love a high-waist crop because I feel most comfortable when jeans are a little bit higher on me. Since I'm petite, they make my legs look longer.
How would you describe your personal style?
California with a little bit of trend and a little bit of classic.
Where do you find outfit inspiration?
I'm on Instagram all day, all the time! I think the "save" button is one of the best things Instagram has come up with. When I'm looking through outfits, I'll save them, and whenever I don't know what to wear, I'll open up my inspo folder—it's probably a picture of [model] Rosie Huntington-Whiteley!
How do you pack for Fashion Week?
I'll bring a mix of 10 daytime outfits and five or so nighttime outfits, and then usually when I go to the different shows, whatever the brand is, they'll messenger me a look to wear. I try to dress for the season that's showing at the time but also for the weather, so it's a little bit difficult because some Septembers are hotter than others.
What's your number one Fashion Week survival tip?
Try to remember to eat and get some sleep. It's hard because you're at shows back to back all day and then going to events.
What are your Fashion Week necessities?
I always have a tote bag with me because I like to bring everything in it. I walk a lot because it just ends up being faster, so I keep a pair of flats in my bag. I always bring a [portable] charger with me as well as business cards because, even though everyone has cell phones, sometimes interactions happen so quickly that you don't have time to tell someone your phone number or email address. And I love Listerine strips—I always have them in my pocket!
Favorite restaurants in NYC?
Jack's Wife Freda is my favorite for lunch. I usually eat there every day. I love going to Cha Cha Matcha for a pick-me-up in between shows, and then for dinner, I love Bar Pitti.
If you have time for anything else at NYFW, what do you do?
I love going to HigherDOSE at 11 Howard. It's an infrared sauna and a really great way for me to unwind. It's so hot that you can't bring your phone in there, so you're actually off your phone and having some alone time. It's the best way to get a sweat out, and you just feel so good after.
