International Women's Day is March 8
International Women's Day is celebrated each year on March 8. The commemoration was established in 1909 in New York City's Garment District, and the event became a platform to promote equal rights for women—including the then-controversial idea that women should have the right to vote.
Today, International Women's Day serves as a call to action for gender equality issues around the world. The annual event reminds us to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate the achievements of women everywhere.
So, how might you celebrate International Women's Day 2020? This year, March 8 falls on a Sunday, so it could be an ideal day to participate in a social-justice rally or volunteer at an organization that assists and empowers women. (And any day is a great day to donate to a nonprofit that improves the lives of girls and women!)
International Women's Day is also an occasion to recognize and honor the important women and girls in your life: grandmothers, mothers, daughters, granddaughters, partners, wives, sisters, friends, teachers and mentors. If you'd like to present her with a celebratory gift, in addition to a heartfelt note or a personal conversation, Nordstrom has lots of thoughtful gifts for her that say "Happy International Women's Day! You're awesome!"
Need a few International Women's Day gift ideas? You might present her with a beautiful journal in which she can express her thoughts and set her goals, activewear to support her commitment to her physical health and strength, or, for her very own "room of one's own," a calming scented candle or an energizing fragrance diffuser. If she enjoys jewelry, consider a personalized charm bracelet or pendant necklace with a stone or a symbol that holds special meaning for her. If she's taking on a fierce challenge, cheer her efforts with a beautiful scarf or wrap in her favorite personal-power color. Or how about a versatile backpack to serve her on her future travels and adventures?
As International Women's Day 2020 approaches, here's an inspiring quote from Susan B. Anthony, the remarkably determined and forward-thinking social activist who was born precisely 200 years ago: "I think the girl who is able to earn her own living and pay her own way should be as happy as anybody on earth. The sense of independence and security is very sweet."
March is Women's History Month
Women's History Month invites us to study and celebrate the vital role women have played in shaping America—and how women continue to influence society today. While media outlets, libraries, schools, museums and community groups may place an extra emphasis on women's history each March, any day of the year is an ideal time to learn more about the women (including our own mothers and grandmothers) who have shaped our world. Here's to celebrating their achievements and following their lead to become positive change-makers ourselves!
