At Nordstrom, we believe one of our most important responsibilities is connecting with and supporting our communities. Created in collaboration with James Carpenter Design Associates, our Manhattan flagship is designed to reflect the spirit of the city and our customers. This seven-level, 320,000-square-foot space occupies the base of the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere, and is one of the first new stores of this size to open in Manhattan since the 1920s.
A wave-form glass façade creates an interactive viewing experience from both inside and outside the store, and connects you to the city around us. Soaring 19-foot ceilings, custom lighting design and an open floor plan work together to form a shopping experience that is unique, easy to navigate and open to discovery.
We've commissioned local, national and international artists to create original artwork and installations, creating memorable experiences in the store. And our Art@Nordstrom app will provide you with an audio-guided tour of our store's collection.
Salesperson, Kids' Shoes
"I love kids—that's what I like most about my fun job," says Jason. "It's a balance. You have to appease both the parent and the child." And, of course, with children—they either want everything or nothing and aren't in the mood to shop. "It keeps me on my toes and sharp," he says. "Sometimes I have to use child psychology and say things like, 'Hey, with this shoe maybe you'll be faster and have a great day at school tomorrow!'" In his spare time, Jason is an artist and musician, and makes ambient music.
"What makes fine jewelry so special is that it's so emotionally fulfilling," says Ky. "There are memories and associations with every purchase, whether you're buying for yourself or a loved one. Jewelry will last a lifetime, and there's always a story to tell." A Washington State native, Ky has been with Nordstrom for seven years and moved to New York to work at the new flagship. He loves to help customers find special gifts. "Some guys might have a photo and say, 'I think this is her style,' while others have no idea what they're getting. I'm happy to spend as long as it takes to help them out."
"I find the fit that's best for the client and never lose track of what the designer intended for a garment," says Fatima, who hails from the Tri-State area and studied fashion design at Rhode Island School of Design, where she honed her skills of illustration, pattern making and all aspects of garment creation. A fashion and costume designer, Fatima has been sewing since childhood and is a master at conducting fittings. "I look at it as a collaboration," she says of her role. "You bring your expertise and also listen to what the client is looking for, and bring the vision together."
