Supporting Our Communities: Nordstrom + Piece & Co.

She Makes It: Nordstrom Partners with Piece & Co.

MARCH 9, 2015

The artisan makes it by hand. The designer makes it fashion. You make it your own. In March 2015, Nordstrom is collaborating with Piece & Co. to bring customers a truly unique collection of apparel and accessories connecting style with global impact and featuring eight incredible brands: Alice + Olivia, Current/Elliott, DVF, Joie, Rebecca Minkoff, The Honest Company, Theory and Tory Burch. "She Makes It" brings to life the work of women artisans around the world through unique, stylish pieces that make an impact.

A Mission to Empower Women

Piece & Co. started in 2011 with founder Kathleen Wright on a one-woman mission: to help thousands of women around the globe. "When women from around the world come together," she says, "pretty amazing things happen."

"Bringing Piece & Co. clothing and accessories to Nordstrom customers will have incredibly tremendous impact on communities around the world." -Kathleen Wright, Founder of Piece & Co.

Based on her experiences at an artisan-focused nonprofit, Wright wanted to help women artisans create a marketplace for their products, and in turn create sustainable employment for themselves. Soon she began to make connections with brands that were looking for authentic alternatives to factory-produced fabrics and accessories. The handmade textiles she helps source—ikat, block print, tie-dye—became sought-after for their one-of-a-kind prints, bold colors and interesting textures. Piece & Co. was born.

But there's more to the story—and it's the part that motivated Wright, herself a mother of two young children, to work even harder to make Piece & Co. what it is today. Sure the fabrics used help create on-trend clothes and accessories, but they also do more. They change lives. With one order from a brand, 75 to 100 artisans can be employed for two to three months. In turn, that affects the lives of 300 to 400 people in a community. Now multiply that by eight well-known and coveted brands who will be selling their unique pieces at Nordstrom stores nationwide and online at Mission accomplished.

"Bringing Piece & Co. clothing and accessories to Nordstrom customers will have an incredibly tremendous impact on communities around the world," Wright said. "We know that ending global poverty starts with women—when you invest in a woman, you invest in her family and community, too. On average, women invest 90 percent of their income back into their families. This includes putting healthy food on the table, paying for their children to go to school or buying healthcare. And our artisans are no different. When we employ one artisan woman, we impact many. I'm excited for the possibilities that this collaboration with Nordstrom and these eight fantastic brands brings."

Handcrafted Style

Starting March 9, style-savvy Nordstrom customers will get the chance to buy the impressive handiwork of these amazing artisans through the great spring looks the "She Makes It" collection has to offer.

"What excites us most about this collaboration with Piece & Co. is how each of the brands really embraced the idea that the clothing they're designing can truly make a difference," said Tricia Smith, executive vice president, general merchandise manager, Women's Apparel at Nordstrom. "It's been inspiring to see how much all of the brands have enjoyed creating their items with these beautiful fabrics, and how they've now been incorporated into their spring collections."

Wright agreed. "It's been amazing to see how each designer took traditional crafted textiles and made them modern. Each has their own take."

In the collection, available at selected Nordstrom stores and online at, customers will find classic silhouettes from the designers in global patterns and colors, including:

  • DVF's new take on the wrap dress, this time made out of indigo-colored batik, a hand-printed fabric that incorporates drawing with wax and dye
  • Alice + Olivia's classic A-line dress in a bold blue and white powerloom print from India
  • Rebecca Minkoff's Mini MAC crossbody in cognac leather accented with textiles woven in Vietnam on a backstrap loom, an ancient weaving tool
  • Tory Burch crackle-printed canvas separates made of a hand-painted fabric from Zambia
  • The Honest Company nursing scarves featuring handloom, a technique with deep cultural roots around the world, screenprinted fabrics and handwoven chambray from Maheshwar and Jodhpur, India

"We think Nordstrom customers will really embrace Piece & Co.'s vision of connecting fashion and empowering the women who help create it," said Smith, "and we can't wait to see how they make it their own."
