We worked with some of our favorite footwear brands to curate a collection of shoes inspired by these noteworthy New Yorkers, their personal styles and life in the big city.
Tennis Champion and Entrepreneur
Sharapova found inspiration for the Nike Cortez in her jet-set lifestyle. She needed a shoe that could carry her from morning to evening no matter where she's going. New York in particular inspires Sharapova with its world-class museums, stunning architecture and the occasional slice of West Village pizza.
Poet and Activist
Maybe you know Wade from her viral TED talk, or you follow her stylish, self-love-centric Instagram account, but wherever you know her from, you have no doubt why the stylish and timeless brand Cole Haan chose her to be the inspiration behind this fierce shoe. "You can always count on Cole Haan to make a great shoe that is also comfortable," she says. "I think they make shoes for real women who have real lives—meaning they have a lot of stuff to get done in a day!" For someone as busy as New York Magazine's "Millennial Oprah," comfort, function and style are all a must, and this shoe has it all.
Founder of Man Repeller
When asked why they chose Leandra, Hunter answered, "Few people encapsulate the energy of the city quite like Leandra." The inspiring entrepreneur was born and bred in the city. Her answer to where she would be found on a typical New York Saturday night explains this perfectly: "Big fan of the 5:30pm dinner—maybe Pascale Jones in Nolita, or Balthazar in Soho, followed by ice cream—snow or shine!—ideally from Morgenstern’s on Houston Street. They have a sundaes counter on Saturday nights where they serve ice cream and drinks that I like to sit at—makes me feel like I’m having a second dinner, but with more fun food groups.” Now we're not only craving those boots but also some ice cream. Thanks, Leandra!
Co-founder of Sam Edelman
Husband Sam Edelman told us that ever since he met Libby almost 40 years ago, her "innate sense of style drives the Sam Edelman brand season after season." Libby herself is inspired by the vibrancy of New York City, from the subway to the sidewalk. She says one of her favorite times was the Studio 54 era, when everything was centered around a great pair of shoes, dancing the night away and somehow after all of that, waking up and having a very productive day.
As a busy stylist, Sulcer is always searching for a flat shoe that’s functional and vibes with her personal style. "The classic black leather boots are very rock 'n' roll and go with everything," she says. This Marc Fisher LTD day-to-night silhouette hints to her love of mixing high-end glamour and cool streetwear.
Shui remembers buying some of her first Jeffrey Campbell shoes when she just moved to New York. Later on, when Kim started her own label, they supported one of her first solo shows. Since then, their relationship has grown into multiple collaborations and a mutual love and admiration. This shoe, like a lot of Kim's work, represents her own cultural mix of a Chinese background, growing up in Italy and being born in the States.
Stylist and Costume Designer
Sorel knows that a New York woman is always on the go and that's why they looked to Shiona for inspiration behind this morning-to-night boot. She in return believes "there's truly no accessory like a versatile shoe—one that meets my day head-on and rises to the challenge." Needing something that can trek all over the city and still feel elevated was the impetus for making this boot.
Costume Designer and Stylist
"The perfect marriage between functional and fashionable." That's how Patricia describes this collaboration between her and UGG. Her signature aesthetic comes from a lifetime of living in New York City and, as she puts it, seeking the "original and unexpected with a classic baseline." The coziness of UGG® shearling and the high-impact style of Field are a match made in heaven.
Fremar started her career with an internship at Harper's Bazaar, and that's when she knew New York was the place to pursue her dreams. This passion led to five years at Vogue, where she always kept a pair of Birkenstocks under her desk. Fashion and styling came naturally to her, and today she works with some of the world's most talked-about celebrities.
Using fashion as a force for good is at the heart of both Eileen Fisher's and Mara Hoffman's female-led businesses. This joint commitment to responsible and sustainable manufacturing made this partnership a natural fit, just like these versatile booties made from recycled materials.
As the founder of Studio Lily Kwong, Kwong strives to reconnect people with nature through the art of landscape design. Her larger-than-life masterpieces can take days or even weeks to build, and in these long hours she always wears her classic Timberlands. With their shared passion for the outdoors, Kwong and Timberland created a timeless yet adventure-ready boot to take on whatever life throws at you.
With a love for fashion and style, Alyssa looked to AGL to create a shoe that was sleek, modern and comfortable enough to trek through the streets of New York. Coscarelli and AGL share a love of retro inspiration, contemporary craftsmanship and, of course, their Italian roots.
