The Story of Allbirds
Once upon a time, a Kiwi ex-footballer (Tim Brown) joined forces with an engineer and renewables expert (Joey Zwillinger) to make modern, sustainable footwear a reality.
Together they created Allbirds. Using innovative renewable materials like New Zealand merino wool, eucalyptus tree fiber and castor beans, they design comfortable shoes for all you do.
Cofounders Tim and Joey have a shared passion for innovation, but it's their differences that make things interesting. WE COMPARED THEIR ANSWERS to some important—and some truly trivial—questions about their origin story, business highs and lows, and the weirdest places they've worn their Allbirds.
What They're Made Of
Get to know the materials that make Allbirds different.
The Original Wonder Wool
The material that started it all. Allbirds uses superfine New Zealand merino wool, which naturally wicks moisture, regulates temperature, minimizes odors—and is so soft you can skip the socks. It's ZQ-certified, meeting strict standards for sustainable farming and animal welfare, and requires 60% less energy to produce than the synthetics usually used in shoes.
The New Tree Line
Allbirds's latest innovation: a proprietary perforated-mesh knit made from FSC-certified eucalyptus tree pulp and 3D knitted in a clean, closed-loop process. The result is a breathable, silky-smooth material with an environmental impact 17 times smaller than traditional shoes.
Down to the Details
Their insoles use plant oil–based foam derived from sustainably grown castor beans, and their laces are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.
